Prof. Mayer Awarded Grant By Power Authority
Adjunct Associate Professor of Marilyn S. Mayer has been awarded a grant by the St. Lawrence River Research and Education Fund (SLRREF), which the New York Power Authority (NYPA) established as part of its relicensing of the St. Lawrence-Franklin D. Roosevelt Power Project in 2003. The grant to Mayer, for $20,000, was among projects "that will contribute to appreciation and understanding of the St. Lawrence River ecosystem," according to the authority.

Students, Faculty Present Research At Math, Computing Conferences
Students and faculty in the mathematics, computer science and statistics department attended two conferences held the weekend of April 16 and 17. Seventeen students and eight faculty/staff members participated in the Hudson River Undergraduate Mathematics Conference (HRUMC) in New Hampshire, where 11 students and two faculty members presented research, and 11 students and three faculty members traveled to the University of Hartford to attend the Consortium for Computing Sciences in Colleges (CCSCNE).
University Awarded Grant For Science Equipment
St. Lawrence University has received a federal grant of $179,336, awarded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. Congressman Bill Owens announced the award, which will fund equipment upgrades in biology and computer science, is sponsored by the National Science Foundation.

News Team Wins Two Regional Murrow Awards
North Country Public Radio's news team has been honored by the Radio and Television News Directors Association (RTNDA) with two 2010 regional Edward R. Murrow Awards. The station took top honors for continuing coverage and investigative reporting in the small market category for New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. The series "A Year of Hard Choices" won first place in the continuing coverage category, and David Sommerstein's "Seaway Valley & Hackett's: A Special Report" was honored for best investigative reporting. Both entries are now in consideration for national Edward R. Murrow awards.
Will Mosenthal '11 Awarded Research Fellowship
William Mosenthal '11, of Norwich, VT, has been awarded one of 24 undergraduate research fellowships by the American Physiological Society (APS). Fellowship winners spend the summer in the laboratory of an established scientist and APS member. Now in its 11th year, this program aims to excite and encourage students about careers in biomedical research. There were 73 applicants for the 2010 fellowships.

Celebrating Mathematics, Easy As Pi
Flexing their mathematical muscles, 51 students took part in the celebration of Pi Day by competing in a "Pi-athlon" hosted by the mathematics, computer science and statistics department. Officially, Pi Day is March 14 (3.14), which fell during the University's spring break. So, while the St. Lawrence event was held a few days late, the approximately 150 pieces of pie served throughout the day helped to assuage any feelings of guilt due to tardiness.
Spring Break Includes Study And Service
"Alternative" spring break travel was a popular option for St. Lawrence students this year, with a group traveling to Tennessee to work on a Habitat for Humanity project, a group volunteering at a community center in Philadelphia and a group conducting study in China, related to a course.

Geoff Baum '10 Presents Research In Puerto Rico
On January 10-13, Geoff Baum '10, of Lockport, NY, and Physics Laboratory Coordinator Jeffrey Miller attended the 3rd ALFALFA Undergraduate Team Workshop at the Arecibo Radio Observatory, in Arecibo, Puerto Rico. The NSF-funded workshop centers on research examining cool hydrogen in distant galaxies. Baum presented his SYE computer science project, conducted with Assistant Professor of Mathematics, Computer Science and Statistics Richard Sharp, titled "Numerical N-Body Simulation and Visualization" to the group, including computer simulations he created that demonstrate the interaction of massive galaxies.

Dining Services Staff Participate In Workshop On Native American Food
Doug Mattice, production manager in Dana Dining Center, and Nate Todd,
catering cook, recently attended a one-day workshop on Native American cookery, held at the College of the Holy Cross and featuring featuring Chef Freddie Bitsoie from Scottsdale, Arizona.
They plan to incorporate some of the information from the workshop, including recipes, into future campus dining offerings.
Prof. Koon Serves On Denmark Ph.D. Panel
Professor of Physics Daniel W. Koon recently served on a Ph.D. examination committee at the Danish Technical University's department of micro- and nanotechnology, in the Copenhagen area. The thesis being evaluated cited five separate papers written and published by Koon while at St. Lawrence, including two papers co-authored with former St. Lawrence Professor of Mathematics Collen J. Knickerbocker and one co-authored with Arshad A. Bahl '90 and Edward O. Duncan '88 while they were University students.

Trustee Sarah Johnson Redlich '82 is executive producer of a documentary, Living In Emergency: Stories of Doctors Without Borders, that is eligible for the Academy Award. The film is being shown for one night only on December 14 in theaters around the country; Elizabeth Vargas, anchor of ABC News' "20/20," will host the one-night event featuring the documentary and will moderate a live panel discussion with aid workers and award-winning journalists. Professor of Physics Daniel Koon's overview of the history and present state of Costa Rican science fiction was mentioned in an article in November 15, 2009's La Nación newspaper, published in San José, Costa Rica. The Adirondack Mountain Club (ADK) has released the third edition of The Adirondack Reader, a collection of writings that spans more than 400 years of the region's history and literature and reflects changing attitudes toward wilderness. Edited by the late Paul Jamieson, who was emerticus professor of English, with University Editor Neal Burdick '72, this edition includes the work of some 30 new writers as well as the classic entries of Adirondack explorers and philosophers for which the book is known. Students Demonstrate Geology Fun For Fifth-Graders
Geology majors helped 110 fifth-graders from Canton Middle School have fun

Andre Couture '82 was recently honored as an Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the

English Honorary Inducts Four Students
Four students were inducted into the Irving Bacheller Society, the
University's Sigma Tau Delta chapter of the International English
Honor Society, in October of 2008. The honorary takes its name from
a member of the St. Lawrence University Class of 1882, the popular
journalist and author of Eben Holden, the first "best-seller" of
the 20th century.

Kevin Szott '86, a three-time U.S. Paralympic gold

Credit-Rating Agencies Upgrade University
The credit-rating agency Standard & Poor's upgraded St. Lawrence University's
bond rating in June (2008), and Moody's reaffirmed its rating. Ratings, which

Kasarian Dane Painting Included In Syracuse's Everson Museum Exhibition
A painting by Assistant Professor of Fine Arts Kasarian Dane is included
in the exhibition "The Object and Beyond: 2008 Everson Biennial"
at the Everson Museum of Art in Syracuse. More than 266 artists residing in
the Central New York region submitted more than 1,000 works for
consideration by exhibition juror Edward Winkleman, an independent curator
and director of Winkleman Gallery in Chelsea, New York, who specializes
in contemporary art. He selected works by 55 artists for the exhibition,
opening June 13 and occupying all four galleries on the second floor of the museum.
NCPR Takes Top Honors At NY AP Awards
North Country Public Radio (NCPR) took top honors in the New York State Associated Press
Broadcasters Awards Competition, announced June 7. The station, hosted at
St. Lawrence, was honored with eight first-place awards, two special mentions
and The Steve Flanders Grand Prize, given to one radio station that exemplifies
the best traditions of journalistic initiative and dedication in providing
a complete news service to the listening public. NCPR, celebrating its
40th anniversary this year, was chosen for the AP's
Grand Prize over all radio stations in New York, regardless of commercial or
public status or market size.

Students Walking 60 Miles In Fund-Raiser

Brad Baldwin Awarded Grant For River Study
Associate Professor of Biology Brad Baldwin has been awarded a grant
by the St. Lawrence River Research and Education Fund (SLRREF), which
the New York Power Authority (NYPA) established as part of its
relicensing of the St. Lawrence-Franklin D. Roosevelt Power Project in 2003.
The grant to Baldwin, for $18,942, was one of four awarded to projects
"that will contribute to appreciation and understanding of the St. Lawrence
River ecosystem," according to the authority.

the 2nd Annual Burnside Review Fiction Chapbook Competition,

Viggo Mortensen '80 has received his first nomination for an Academy Award,

announced February 24. Mortensen also was nominated for his first Golden

Seniors Participate In U.N. Climate Change Conference
Shelly Martin '08, of Stowe, Vermont, and Kate Olsen '08, of

Students Awarded Grants For Travel Research
The Center for International and Intercultural Studies awarded grants for
independent travel and research to seven students, allowing all to pursue
research in other countries. Independent travel and research grants allow

Jeff Seely '76 has been appointed chief executive officer of Seattle,

Theatre Students Assist Local Elementary School
Students in the course Children's Theatre, taught by Assistant Professor of
Performance and Communication Arts Ann Marie G. Halstead, worked with
fifth- and sixth-graders in Canton's St. Mary's School, giving the
course a community-based-learning component. The students' work helped
the school meet a state requirement that they otherwise would not have

English Honorary Society Inducts New Members
Eleven students were inducted into the Irving Bacheller Society, the

students must have an overall average of at least 3.2 and a psychology
average of at least 3.4 (based on a minimum of four psychology courses

English Prof Duriel Harris Giving Reading In Syracuse
The current season's Stone Canoe Writer's Series in Syracuse will begin with
a reading by poet and musician Duriel E. Harris, assistant professor of English,
on Saturday, October 6, at 2 p.m. at the Delavan Art Gallery, 501 West Fayette
Street, Syracuse. Harris will read her poetry and discuss experimental
projects that integrate poetry with dance, music and painting.

Prof, Alum Co-Author Award-Winning Biometrics Paper
A paper co-authored by Assistant Professor of Michael E. Schuckers and Yordan Minev '07 won
third prize at the International Conference on Biometrics, held in Korea in August. Much
of the research conducted by Minev for the paper also was part of his senior-year
experience, for his degree in economics/mathematics.

SLU Participates In Project To Improve Depression Screening
Fifteen percent of college students suffered from depression last year,
up from 10 percent in 2000, according to The American College Health
Association. Mental health professionals on college campuses expect
the percentage to rise again this year, but St. Lawrence University
is addressing the problem by participating in a national pilot project
to improve screening and care for students with depression.
Bernard Smith '01 Named 'Marketer Of The Next Gen'
Bernard Smith '01 was recently selected by Brandweek Magazine as one of
10 "Marketers of the Next Generation," a list of "the hottest marketers

Student Groups Volunteer For Spring Break '07

English Honorary Inducts New Members
Eleven students were inducted into the Irving Bacheller Society, the University's
Sigma Tau Delta chapter of the International English Honor Society, in
spring 2007. The honorary takes its name from a member of the St. Lawrence
University Class of 1882, the popular journalist and author of Eben Holden,
the first "best-seller" of the 20th century.
Second Book By Paul Fideler '58 Published
Paul A. Fideler '58 recently had his second book published, Social Welfare in Pre-Industrial
England: The Old Poor Law Tradition (Palgrave Macmillan, 2006). The volume crosses
period boundaries that often isolate late medieval, early modern and 18th-century
historiographies from one another.

Sean Murphy '91 Among 'Fab 50' Litigators
The American Lawyer has named Sean M. Murphy '91, a partner at Milbank,
Tweed, Hadley & McCloy LLP, as a "Fab 50 Young Litigator," an elite group of
litigators whom the magazine recognizes as the top 50 litigators
in the United States under age 45. Murphy, 37, is a securities litigator in
the New York office of Milbank.

Lorien Eck M'06 Earns National Honor
Lorien Eck M'06, of Los Angeles, CA, has received certification from the National Board for
Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS). She is one of 7,700 teachers nationwide to
achieve National Board Certification in 2006, and the only known St. Lawrence
graduate to receive the certification.
'Puck Run '07' Raises Funds For Area Hospital
Braving one of the few snowstorms to hit the North Country to date this winter,

Doreen M. Tobin '74, MEd '75, interim vice president for student affairs at

workshop taught by Professor of Modern Languages and Literatures Steven White,
have had work published in the Cadernos de Tradução, No. XVI,
from the Federal University of Santa Catarina in Florianópolis, Brazil.

A new exhibition, "Corridor of Time: Cretaceous and Paleocene Prehistoric Life,"

Book By NCPR's Brian Mann Published
Brian Mann, a reporter for St. Lawrence University-based North Country Public
Radio, has published his first book, Welcome to the Homeland, which the publisher
describes as a "unique blend of travelogue, political analysis, and family memoir."
NCPR Receives Grant from New York State Music Fund
North Country Public Radio, based at St. Lawrence University, is the recipient
of a $330,000 grant from The New York State Music Fund for UpNorth Music, a
project to spotlight and promote regional musicians. Over the next two years,
a team from NCPR will travel around the North Country to record a wide variety
of musical acts, and will present performances through on-air broadcast,
podcasts, CDs, and concerts. The New York State Music Fund was created when
the New York State attorney general's office resolved investigations against
major record companies that had violated state and federal laws prohibiting
"pay-for-play," also called "payola."

Off-Campus Summer Study Takes Place In Four Countries
Participating in an archaeological "dig" in Africa, exploring a Caribbean
coral reef and studying art in one of the great European capitals were
among the experiences St. Lawrence students had while taking Summerterm
2006 courses taught off campus. The courses allow study abroad without committing
to an entire semester or year away from the University. This is the first
year that a summer version of St. Lawrence's very popular program
of study in Kenya was offered.
