Students, Faculty Present Research At Math, Computing Conferences
Students and faculty in the mathematics, computer science and statistics department attended two conferences held the weekend of April 16 and 17. Seventeen students and eight faculty/staff members participated in the Hudson River Undergraduate Mathematics Conference (HRUMC) in New Hampshire, where 11 students and two faculty members presented research, and 11 students and three faculty members traveled to the University of Hartford to attend the Consortium for Computing Sciences in Colleges (CCSCNE).

University Awarded Grant For Science Equipment
St. Lawrence University has received a federal grant of $179,336, awarded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. Congressman Bill Owens announced the award, which will fund equipment upgrades in biology and computer science, is sponsored by the National Science Foundation.

News Team Wins Two Regional Murrow Awards
North Country Public Radio's news team has been honored by the Radio and Television News Directors Association (RTNDA) with two 2010 regional Edward R. Murrow Awards. The station took top honors for continuing coverage and investigative reporting in the small market category for New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. The series "A Year of Hard Choices" won first place in the continuing coverage category, and David Sommerstein's "Seaway Valley & Hackett's: A Special Report" was honored for best investigative reporting. Both entries are now in consideration for national Edward R. Murrow awards.

Will Mosenthal '11 Awarded Research Fellowship
William Mosenthal '11, of Norwich, VT, has been awarded one of 24 undergraduate research fellowships by the American Physiological Society (APS). Fellowship winners spend the summer in the laboratory of an established scientist and APS member. Now in its 11th year, this program aims to excite and encourage students about careers in biomedical research. There were 73 applicants for the 2010 fellowships.

Two St. Lawrence students - roommates - have been awarded "100 Projects for Peace" grants for 2010, in the fourth year of the program. With the grants, of $10,000 each, Brijlal Chaudhari '10, of Nepal, and Melih Cokaygil '11, of Turkey, plan to undertake projects in their home countries.

Celebrating Mathematics, Easy As Pi
Flexing their mathematical muscles, 51 students took part in the celebration of Pi Day by competing in a "Pi-athlon" hosted by the mathematics, computer science and statistics department. Officially, Pi Day is March 14 (3.14), which fell during the University's spring break. So, while the St. Lawrence event was held a few days late, the approximately 150 pieces of pie served throughout the day helped to assuage any feelings of guilt due to tardiness.

Spring Break Includes Study And Service
"Alternative" spring break travel was a popular option for St. Lawrence students this year, with a group traveling to Tennessee to work on a Habitat for Humanity project, a group volunteering at a community center in Philadelphia and a group conducting study in China, related to a course.

SLU's Own DIY Network: Students Build Computers For Lab
When Associate Professor of Mathematics, Computer Science and Statistics Ed Harcourt said he wanted his computer science students to "get their feet wet and their hands dirty," he wasn't kidding. The dozen students in the fall 2009 course High-Performance Linux Computing Systems, co-taught with Assistant Professor Richard Sharp, built 55 computers for three labs, from scratch, motherboards to monitors.

Geoff Baum '10 Presents Research In Puerto Rico
On January 10-13, Geoff Baum '10, of Lockport, NY, and Physics Laboratory Coordinator Jeffrey Miller attended the 3rd ALFALFA Undergraduate Team Workshop at the Arecibo Radio Observatory, in Arecibo, Puerto Rico. The NSF-funded workshop centers on research examining cool hydrogen in distant galaxies. Baum presented his SYE computer science project, conducted with Assistant Professor of Mathematics, Computer Science and Statistics Richard Sharp, titled "Numerical N-Body Simulation and Visualization" to the group, including computer simulations he created that demonstrate the interaction of massive galaxies.

Professor of Physics Daniel W. Koon recently served on a Ph.D. examination committee at the Danish Technical University's department of micro- and nanotechnology, in the Copenhagen area. The thesis being evaluated cited five separate papers written and published by Koon while at St. Lawrence, including two papers co-authored with former St. Lawrence Professor of Mathematics Collen J. Knickerbocker and one co-authored with Arshad A. Bahl '90 and Edward O. Duncan '88 while they were University students.

Trustee Sarah Johnson Redlich '82 is executive producer of a documentary, Living In Emergency: Stories of Doctors Without Borders, that is eligible for the Academy Award. The film is being shown for one night only on December 14 in theaters around the country; Elizabeth Vargas, anchor of ABC News' "20/20," will host the one-night event featuring the documentary and will moderate a live panel discussion with aid workers and award-winning journalists. Kasarian Dane Painting Included In Syracuse's Everson Museum Exhibition
A painting by Assistant Professor of Fine Arts Kasarian Dane is included in the exhibition "The Object and Beyond: 2008 Everson Biennial" at the Everson Museum of Art in Syracuse. More than 266 artists residing in the Central New York region submitted more than 1,000 works for consideration by exhibition juror Edward Winkleman, an independent curator and director of Winkleman Gallery in Chelsea, New York, who specializes in contemporary art. He selected works by 55 artists for the exhibition, opening June 13 and occupying all four galleries on the second floor of the museum.

NCPR Takes Top Honors At NY AP Awards
North Country Public Radio (NCPR) took top honors in the New York State Associated Press Broadcasters Awards Competition, announced June 7. The station, hosted at St. Lawrence, was honored with eight first-place awards, two special mentions and The Steve Flanders Grand Prize, given to one radio station that exemplifies the best traditions of journalistic initiative and dedication in providing a complete news service to the listening public. NCPR, celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, was chosen for the AP's Grand Prize over all radio stations in New York, regardless of commercial or public status or market size.

Brad Baldwin Awarded Grant For River Study
Associate Professor of Biology Brad Baldwin has been awarded a grant by the St. Lawrence River Research and Education Fund (SLRREF), which the New York Power Authority (NYPA) established as part of its relicensing of the St. Lawrence-Franklin D. Roosevelt Power Project in 2003. The grant to Baldwin, for $18,942, was one of four awarded to projects "that will contribute to appreciation and understanding of the St. Lawrence River ecosystem," according to the authority.

Theatre Students Assist Local Elementary School

SLU Participates In Project To Improve Depression Screening
Fifteen percent of college students suffered from depression last year, up from 10 percent in 2000, according to The American College Health Association. Mental health professionals on college campuses expect the percentage to rise again this year, but St. Lawrence University is addressing the problem by participating in a national pilot project to improve screening and care for students with depression.

Brian Mann, a reporter for St. Lawrence University-based North Country Public Radio, has published his first book, Welcome to the Homeland, which the publisher describes as a "unique blend of travelogue, political analysis, and family memoir."

NCPR Receives Grant from New York State Music Fund
North Country Public Radio, based at St. Lawrence University, is the recipient of a $330,000 grant from The New York State Music Fund for UpNorth Music, a project to spotlight and promote regional musicians. Over the next two years, a team from NCPR will travel around the North Country to record a wide variety of musical acts, and will present performances through on-air broadcast, podcasts, CDs, and concerts. The New York State Music Fund was created when the New York State attorney general's office resolved investigations against major record companies that had violated state and federal laws prohibiting "pay-for-play," also called "payola."

Off-Campus Summer Study Takes Place In Four Countries
Participating in an archaeological "dig" in Africa, exploring a Caribbean coral reef and studying art in one of the great European capitals were among the experiences St. Lawrence students had while taking Summerterm 2006 courses taught off campus. The courses allow study abroad without committing to an entire semester or year away from the University. This is the first year that a summer version of St. Lawrence's very popular program of study in Kenya was offered.
